Historical accuracy is boring. Remember that.

Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story with the neon pink bacchanal of Marie Antionette’s Royal Court. Morality is social currency, and self-righteousness has consequences in this debauched and sugary sweet immersive experience. CAKE sends you hurtling through our political landscape where focus is put on hating perpetrators rather than uplifting victims. Bathe in the fluorescence of IMRSE’s Matilda Award nominated masterpiece as it makes its return at Metro Arts in November 2024 after their showstopping 2023 season. Rich, decadent and vibrant, CAKE is an immersive experience that will have you ruminating on your own relationship with social currency and political expression.

Written by Dan Gough and Emma Churchland, CAKE is IMRSE’s inaugural work.

CAKE and Accessibility.

As part of IMRSE’s accessibility initiative, we have partnered with Accessibility Consultant Zenny Rich to increase the access options of CAKE.

The following tools have been implemented for the 2024 run of CAKE:

  • IMRSE has commissioned an Access Equity and Opportunity Guide from Zenny Rich to evaluate the accessibility of our current run of CAKE and to provide recommendations for our future productions.

  • We have implemented a Tiered Trigger Warning system. Recent research has suggested that trigger warnings are not as effective as previously understood. However, we believe that removing trigger warnings and not replacing it with any other options would be irresponsible. Therefore, at CAKE you will be able to scan a QR code to see a list of trigger warnings scaffolded into tiers. You can choose to see trigger warnings on a multitude of topics, depending on what you want and need.

  • To aid those with sensory sensitivities, Front of House will be providing a Light Sensitivity Cue Card. This will help you to prepare yourself or close your eyes prior to any major lighting events including strobe and bright, flashing lights.

  • Specifications and ingredients of the fluid we are using in our haze machines will be clearly listed.

  • While you will not be eating, there will be food in the space. There will be a list of allergens and ingredients available for anyone with airborne allergies.

  • Seats have been evaluated for exposure to bright lights. Any seat deemed inaccessible to those with light sensitivity will have a placard on them, and you will have the option to move to another seat.

Your experiences and feedback are valuable to us. An online survey is available here and on the night for you to provide your feedback on the accessibility of CAKE. These responses are anonymous and will be reviewed for CAKE’s Access Equity and Opportunity Guide and any changes we make to future projects. We are deeply grateful for your feedback.
